If a message says 'billing problem with a previous purchase' or 'verification required'

If these messages appear, you have an unpaid balance. Change your payment method or redeem a gift card and use the balance to pay for any unpaid orders.

If you have an unpaid balance

If you see a message that says 'billing problem with a previous purchase' or 'verification required,' you have an unpaid balance. Apple couldn't charge your payment method for a previous purchase. Until you pay your balance, you might be unable to:

  • Make new purchases

  • Download free apps

  • Use subscriptions

After you pay your outstanding balance, you can make new purchases or use subscriptions again.

Pay an unpaid balance

You can pay an unpaid balance by retrying your purchase, or by using a new, valid payment method. You can also purchase and redeem an Apple Gift Card or App Store Card.

Try your current payment method again

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Settings app and tap your name.

  2. Tap Payment & Shipping. You might be asked to sign in with your Apple Account.

  3. Tap Fix Payment Information.

  4. Tap Try Again to retry your purchase.

Change your payment method

  1. Add a new, valid payment method.

  2. Remove the old payment method.

  3. The new payment method is charged automatically.

Use an Apple Gift Card or App Store Card

  1. Purchase an Apple Gift Card or App Store Card.*

  2. Redeem the gift card to add funds to your Apple Account.

  3. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Settings app and tap your name.

  4. Tap Media & Purchases, then tap View Account. You might be asked to sign in with your Apple Account.

  5. Tap Purchase History.

  6. Tap the order with red text that says Amount You Owe.

  7. Tap Pay with Apple Account Credit.

After you pay for the unpaid order, you can make purchases with your remaining Apple Account balance.

* Gift cards aren't available in all countries or regions.

If you use Family Sharing and purchase sharing is turned on

The family organizer's payment method is charged for all family members' purchases, unless the purchasing family member has a valid payment method.

If you're the family organizer

If you or a family member can't make purchases, change your payment method.
